Julianne DeAngelo's life is on track: working toward a degree in marketing, she is also juggling a full-time job and planning her wedding. Driven to succeed, she joins an on-line marketing group where a mentor, Jack Guilder, becomes her confidante. Their on-line relationship grows, adding to Julianne’s second thoughts when her fiancé comes home smelling of perfume. Adding insult to injury, Julianne spies her fiancé in a cozy tête-à-tête with her disloyal sister. Julianne cancels the wedding and throws herself into a marketing career with Jack, getting caught up in a web of deception. With their futures on the line, Julianne and Jack struggle to maintain the image they’ve created as a couple, but Julianne’s former fiancé isn’t giving up without a fight.

The Romance StudioJulianne is a great character, sure of her intelligence but not her looks, due to her sleazy manipulative sister and the mother who plays favorites and won’t see Suzanne as she really is. There is a lot of emotional drama and suspense in this story. I loved the Alec character; he is a true fairy godfather to Jack and Julie. Jack is an interesting and extremely complex man. The loss of his parents and breakup of his engagement made him isolate himself emotionally, fearing hurt. Julie has broken through his walls despite himself, but he does not know how to convince her that his feelings are not part of the game they are playing with the client. Steve, the psychopathic ex really shakes things up. I also enjoyed the subplot of Julianne reconnecting with her father’s brother. This story is a definite keeper. Overall rating: 4-1/2 hearts out of 5
Karla Brandenburg definitely kept the reader at their seat and crossing their fingers [that] Julianne and Jack end up together. She throws in some nice twists to make it the not-so-average romance book. Keeping the ex fiancé in throughout the whole book to stir up a little drama helped to keep the excitement coming. Also, this story . . . was made to feel as though this scenario could happen to any person; it felt very real-life. Julianne has a mom who favors her sister and seems a little unstable and unfair. Her sister, Suzanne, is a typical sister who isn’t perfect and who uses her looks to get what she wants. This reminds me of something that anyone can go through in a family. Families aren’t always perfect and sometimes they just downright stink, but we still love them and do our best to get through life. This is what Julianne does. She has these very real problems with her family and grits her teeth and pushes through the stress.
. . .I would definitely recommend this romance novel. It is a quick read, filled with just enough adventure and excitement to keep you turning the pages so you can find out what’s going to happen. Karla Brandenburg does a great job at keeping the reader interested.

Julianne, with the typical dysfunctional family background is a couple of weeks from her wedding, when fate, her online buddy and sister conspire to change the course of her life. . .
I really liked "An Intimate Distance" as I could relate to most of what was going on. Karla's take on the influence of family on one's self-perception is brilliant. Equally incise is the manner in which she has condensed what can be really any workingwoman's life and choices. Networking, sexual harassment, emotional baggage, difficulties in letting go, and the need for life-work balance are all issues and experiences real enough to add to the romance.
It’s a Sunday afternoon and I’ve just finished Karla Brandenburg’s Intimate Distance. It has left me in the most nostalgic of moods as the story is one with which I can strongly identify. Karla’s writing appealed to me so intensely that I was unable to put the book down. I was easily able to identify with each of the characters as she skillfully brought out their humanity. As is common with contemporary romance novels, one may think the outcome is going to be good, but Karla’s ability to hold off the certainty of the outcome and to tease the reader was marvelous without being tedious and trite.
Karla masterfully ties in the book title and the design of the book’s cover as the story unfolds. Their connections become clear gradually almost sneaking up on the reader. The characters were very real to me even though the situation they’re in is a little outrageous. It’s actually through that outrageous situation that Karla reveals the true natures of two rather self-protective individuals and that of the other characters as well.
Intimate Distance was a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting read. I’m nearly half way through Karla’s first book, The Treasure of St. Paul. I’m finding it equally interesting and I’m anxious for the publication of her next book.
